Cats and Dogs

Any guy can love a dog. A dog is like that young and immature girlfriend. The one who drools all over you and looks up with her puppy dog eyes, doing everything in her power to please you.

It takes a man of passion, intelligence and patience to love a cat. A cat is like the self assured woman. She reclines on the sofa waiting with eyes closed for you to come and stroke her. She purrs when you do something right but doesn’t beg for your attention. The cat and the woman have a secret. They know that they deserve the world but that the world can’t be given to them. They need to catch it and play with it and then curl up in the sun and dream of all the possibilities that the world has for them when they wake up .

The cat and the woman let the man come to them.

I find myself attracted to cat lovers even though I’m well aware that there is still a lot of puppy in me. The goal is to someday be all cat.

  1. Oooh, I love this and I am going to share it with my guy who matches this description so well. I added two cats to our household last year as the first pets I’ve had in 15 years and originally he argued for a dog, but he has since fallen hard for the cats and probably loves and spoils them more than I do.

  2. For some reason I find this post completely charming! ;) *bumps bibliomom’s ankles affectionately*

  3. Nice observation, but I’m now very confused. I have an equal love for cats and dogs, what does that say about me??

  4. Puppies have charm. So do kitties. I used to be all-cat, but now I’m thinking of getting a dog. I wonder what that makes me?

  5. I like dogs. I like cats too. I don’t know what that says about me.

  6. As a general rule, I dislike dogs. I thought it was the smell but that doesn’t really make sense since the dogs I do like still smell just like dogs. And I do like some smelly cats (for example, the invalid aging cat that lives in my house).

Perhaps you’ve hit on a deeper truth. Perhaps it is their usual personalities.

  7. ah… bibliomom, you are neither a common cat or a common dog. You’re the Amur leopard, one of the rarest creatures on earth that would be extinct except for the extremely excellent and watchful parenting skills of a handful of Amur mothers. These beautiful creatures are adapted to harsh, winter climates and any hunter intent on capturing one is sure to fail… but a patient, dedicated nature lover might in time win their trust.

    This description fits you better.

  8. Brilliant! Brava, bibliomon! Brava!

Women are cats. Men who love cats are good for women. There’s your first lesson.

  9. Having always considered myself a “dog person” and really not a fan of cats (other than the fluffy one above) I have seen an entirely different image here, and I may have to re-think my opinion!

  10. I read in the paper today that there are more cats than dogs. So I guess cats rule.

  11. Hhhhmmmm, married 13+ years, house now abounds with children, and 4 cats. But last year, finally got my puppy.
Lovely article on men/women relationships, keep up the good work.
    Peace,

  12. Keep in mind, though, that there are only about 40 Amur leopards left. We’re so beautiful and rare that idiots keep bumping us off. I’m a Siberian tiger, so I know from whence I speak.

I’m a Both person. I like being singled out for a cat’s affection, but sometimes it’s nice to have a dog love you with its clumsy enthusiasm too.

  13. I loved this, for reasons not too difficult to guess. My spotted girls liked it, too.

Interestingly, my bestest friend in the whole world, whom I regard in many ways as my twin brother, is a die-hard dog person. He likes cats, but I don’t think he would ever want one. So I don’t know what to make of that.

  14. And after I left that comment, I was amused to realize that I am actually in some odd subset of cat lovers, in that I particularly like very independent cats that aren’t necessarily lap-sitters. My girls are all very interesting, smart, eccentric, and in one case evil and manipulative, but they’re not particularly affectionate. So I know that when they are, they really want to be, and it makes me melt into a puddle.

Let’s not even consider what that might indicate about my taste in women.

  15. Nice post! Makes me proud to be a cat-lover (I have 3 cats)!

  16. There is much to be said for both. I’ve had cats in my life for as long as I can remember, and while I introduced my husband to the joys of cats he introduced me to the joys of dogs.

I’ll always be a “cat person”, but sometimes it’s nice to have someone in the house who’s always glad to see you and thinks you’re all that and a bag of dog biscuts.

  17. “The cat and the woman have a secret”
    I love that line.

I was here earlier and was inspired to go on a mission to find Rudyard Kipling’s story, The Cat who walks Alone.

An ex-boyfriend used to call me “the cat who walks alone.” He didn’t know the secret, though.

  18. Wonderfully put, Bibliomom.

I like Amuirin’s description of you, too. :)

  19. Oooh I love Amuirin’s description of you, too.

Well, at the risk of distancing myself out of B-mom’s good graces, I have always been a dog person. I don’t really like cats… I don’t “get” cats.

But last Feb I saved out of a tree a stray kitten that no one would take off my hands. It happened again in May with another teeny, tiny kitten.

So shortly after that happened, I’m at my favorite little pub and tell a friend, Carol, the long story of how I have a cat but insist I hate cats and am a dog person.

After the show people are getting autographs from the songwriter who played that night. A couple of the other artists, me, and Carol, who is the girlfriend of the guy on stage, begin autographing each other’s arms to poke fun at him.

    She wrote this on me

“dog people who love kitties are cat people.”

  20. So, what does it say that my husband is allergic to cats? Hmmmmm.

  21. Personally, speaking as a mantype creature, I prefer human female type creatures they are much more interesting to communicate with than cats or dogs,

  22. I’ve had Siamese cats which fit the dog description (clinging to you like a bad cold) and my Siberian huskies both former and present do anything but correspond to the typical dog servility and eagerness to please. They are the cats of the dog world, and after having them, though always having enjoyed larger dogs, I find other breeds cloying. And they smell good, and groom themselves.

  23. Amurin, after reading my post today, suggested I look at this. How perfectly it expresses a truth. You said it all beautifully.

  24. Your assessment of cats couldn’t be more accurate!
Somehow like all the kids are drawn to one of the neighbors homes, I have the neighborhood cat hang out…

  25. I once had two cats. Then I discovered dogs.

You can’t take a cat for a walk in the woods, or toss a stick in the lake for him/her.

Cat to me are like the really cool kids in high school. They were great, but not all that down to earth.

  26. This is very interesting to me. There is actually one person that I have wondered about, a dog lover that can’t stand cats at all. I wonder what makes her tick because I don’t get it. Maybe you’ve just shed some light on it. Hhmmm. Very interesting.

  27. GRAWP!!!

(^ that is the sound of the highland yeti signaling its readiness for your immediate return to blogland)

  28. grawp… grawp

i think I heard it all the way down here in Texas. Surely B-mom heard it. Come back B-mom!!! and show us those cute feet of yours!

  29. I hadn’t thought of this post until someone today mentioned dogs and dating.

Am and D I see your comments and I’ll raise them a post. I promise.

  30. I love this post. Much more sensual and inviting than my usual analogy about dogs and cats:

Having a dogs are a like having a child, with all its joys and headaches.

Having a cat is like having a furry, four-legged non-english speaking roommate. They’re cool if you leave them alone, and they’re cool if you want to hang out and however they are notoriously bad at cleaning up after themselves.
